Statt Ang&propaganda regiert auf Oh Fortune die Neugier aufs Leben, so ganz ohne Szene-Uniform und doppelten Boden. Bei dem Typ kann man ja mal anrufen.

an Mangan hat keine Zeit auf sein Konto zu schauen. Kanada ist groß, und wer sich da bei seinem Publikum

persönlich blicken lassen möchte, muss es sich erwandern, erspielen und erfahren. Wenn Dan Mangan wissen will, wie es um seinen Erfolg steht, braucht er sich nur die Verö'ent-lichungstermine seiner Platten ansehen. Nice, Nice, Very Nice kam vor zwei Jahren raus, und zwar zwei Jahre lang, ein Territorium nach dem andern, und Mangan musste endlos über eine Platte sprechen, die eigentlich schon Ge-schichte war. Das wird ihm nicht noch einmal passieren, mittlerweile kennt man sein Gesicht und seine Stimme, und Oh Fortune, die neue LP, erscheint überall auf der Welt praktisch gleichzeitig. Deswegen muss Dan jetzt auch alle Interviews gleichzeitig führen, muss immer häufiger rechts ranfahren, frühmorgens und spät abends, wenn wieder mal ein Journalist durchgestellt wird, während er zum nächsten Konzert fährt.

„Ja, wir sind auf der Straße mitten in der Pampa, auf dem Weg nach Edmonton. Noch schneit es nicht, aber das kommt wohl in den nächsten Wochen, wenn es weiter nach Norden geht“, sagt Dan und lacht ein großes kanadi-sches Lachen. „Ich war sogar mal in einer Stadt namens Dawson City ganz oben am Yukon, eine der nördlichsten Städte auf dem Kontinent. Im Sommer haben die da oben ein Musikfestival, bei dem die Sonne wochenlang nicht unter-geht. Es ist ein erstaunlicher Ort, viele Musiker reisen da für ein oder zwei Monate hin, wenn sie völlig abgeschieden sein und sich ganz auf ihre Sachen konzentrieren wollen.“

Dan ist gerne Kanadier, er kennt die Kli-schees und er ist froh, dass sie alle irgendwie zutre'en in ihrer wohlmeinenden Harmlosig-keit. Er schwärmt von den Staatsanleihen und Kulturprogrammen, die junge Bands finanziell unterstützen und früh zur politischen Teilhabe animieren. „Das ist toll und sehr hilfreich“, findet Dan. „Es gibt verschiedene Programme, manche ähneln Darlehen, andere schießen Benzingeld zu. Das funktioniert in allen ande-ren Branchen ja auch, warum soll man Musik nicht subventionieren? Der Kultursektor stellt in Kanada immerhin 10% des Bruttosozialpro-duktes dar.“ Dann lacht er wieder. „Man muss aber schon nachweisen, dass man das Geld sinnvoll verwendet.“

Er für seinen Teil ist bereits mit gutem Bei-spiel vorangegangen. Oh Fortune ist ein tolles Album geworden, das sich mit o'enen Armen und breiter Brust anbietet und Zuversicht und Trost ausstrahlt. Elf Songs, denen jede Art von Selbstinszenierung abgeht, und eine Stimme, die mit dem Leben im Reinen zu sein scheint.

chen, die einem die Eltern früher auch schon immer gesagt haben, aber irgendwie hört man ihm lieber zu. Er führt das passende Leben, hat die passen-den Melodien parat, und eine Stimme wie ein Anorak, der bis zum Schluss zu dir hält.

„Gesangsunterricht habe ich aber nie genom-men“, sagt er. „Als Teenager war meine Stimme sogar noch rauer und gerölliger, aber damals hab ich in Bands auch nur rumgeschrien. Ich musste sie erst weich bekommen und gleichzei-tig laut bleiben. Wie ich sie am besten einsetzen

soll, weiß ich eigentlich immer noch nicht. Ich hab immer noch das Gefühl, dass selbst die glücklichen Songs bei mir irgendwie melancho-lisch klingen.“ Mangan hörte als Jugendlicher viel „Grunge und Radiohead“, wenn keiner dabei war auch gerne Van Morrison. Heute darf es vor allem Jazz sein, Ornette Coleman, Miles Davis, Albert Ayers und Misha Mengelberg. „Es wäre eine Schande sich vor bestimmten Aus-prägungen zu verschließen“, sagt der Sänger. „Wenn es meine Bandmitglieder nicht gäbe, hätte ich so manche Musik nie gehört. Free Jazz zum Beispiel. Aber ich will wachsen, und da umgibt man sich am besten mit solchen Leuten. Man muss Kunst insgesamt sehr o'en gegenüberstehen. Menschen, die Kunst gegen-über aufgeschlossen sind, sind auch dem Leben gegenüber aufgeschlossen.“ Oh ja, auch Eltern lieben Dan Mangan.

Am anderen Ende der Leitung rollt der Wagen wieder, der Verkehr wird wohl auch nicht so schlimm sein in der kanadischen Einöde. Dan Mangan freut sich auf das nächste Konzert, Edmonton freut sich wahrscheinlich

auch, und es soll sich sowieso keiner außen vor fühlen, wenn es ein neues Album zu feiern gibt. Oh Fortune sei ein passender Plattentitel, sagt der Sänger, weil der Ausdruck die Ambivalenz vermittele, die das Leben kennzeichnet. „Es kann sich um einen Freudenausdruck handeln,

es kann aber auch eine Klage sein. Es steht für das Unbekannte, ein Schritt vor den anderen. Für Wunder. Eine Metapher für die Existenz insgesamt. Wir wissen nicht, was in zehn oder zehntausend Jahren passiert, wir können nur sehr bescheiden ins Ungewisse schreiten.“

Vielleicht liegt es wieder nur an seiner Stim-me, aber wenn Mangan so etwas sagt, klingt es plötzlich freundlich und gelassen, was einem ansonsten oft Angst einjagt. Es ist sowieso eine merkwürdige Art der Spiritualität, die gedeiht, wenn die Sonne wochenlang nicht untergeht: „Ich bin kein gelernter Buddhist, aber ich habe den Eindruck, die hatten ein paar über-zeugende Ideen.“ !"#$%& '()$*+,#-+$

CANADIAN DEMOCRACYDie meisten Rockstars sind im Grunde Monarchisten, nur Dan Mangan feiert das Bürgertum: „Es gibt eine neue musikalische Mittelklasse, die so nie da war. Entweder du warst ein Superstar oder du warst auf der Talentbühne. Jetzt gibt es viele Leute, die von ihrer Kreativität leben ohne besonders reich oder besonders berühmt zu sein. Das ist sehr gesund, genau wie eine starke Mittelschicht immer gesund für die Gesellschaft ist.“

(Wie ich meine Stimme am besten einsetzen soll, weiß ich eigentlich immer noch nicht.)

„Ich will keine traurige Musik und auch keine fröhliche Musik machen“, sagt er. „Ich will ehr-liche Musik machen.“ Für seine Verhältnisse ist das fast schon ein verbissenes Statement, denn eigentlich ist Dan kein Mann großer Worte und lauter Ansagen. Außerdem ist er, trotz Bart und Karohemd, keiner jener humorlosen Leidensapostel, die am liebsten um ihren eigenen Bauchnabel kreisen und es in ihrer Musik ganz auf emotionale Erpressung angelegt haben.

Mangan kann man sich eher als Mann der Tat vorstellen, der einem nicht nur das Schneemobil repariert, sondern womöglich auch noch das Herz. Ein lockerer Typ, der Frauen noch über Schwellen trägt, Kaminfeuer und Bärenfell inklusive. Und jemand, der trotz Songtiteln wie If I Am Dead und Regarding Death And Dying ei-gentlich ein fröhlicher Hüpfer mit philosophischer Gelassenheit ist. „Klar, es geht viel um Krieg, Tod und Feuer“, sagt er, „aber das ans Licht zu bringen und darüber zu sprechen ist ganz gesund. Anders-herum wäre es das wohl kaum. Man muss solchen Sachen Platz einräumen und sie atmen lassen. Wir haben nicht alle Antworten, aber das ist schon okay so. Wir sollten weitermachen und uns amüsieren.“

Die Katastrophen in Mangan-Songs sind immer noch weit genug weg, um so etwas wie persönliches Glück möglich zu machen, und der Sänger ist der erste, der sich als Profiteur davon sieht. „Ich halte mich für eine sehr optimistische Person, auch wenn ich na-türlich andere Seiten habe, die sich unbewusst auch in den Songs niederschlagen“, sagt er. „Aber wir reisen viel, was bedeutet, dass wir viele Orte und viele Men-schen kennenlernen. Dadurch sehen wir das Leben aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven, was wiederum sehr spannend ist. So erkennt man, dass es nicht nur einen korrekten Weg gibt zu leben. Reisen ist mit das Lehrreichste was es gibt. Man lernt andere Menschen und ihre Ideen kennen und merkt, dass man sich nicht vor ihnen fürchten muss.

Dieserdritte Teil der Konzeptalbenreihe„Nomad-Series“ ist rau, rockig,brutal und hart. Eine tiefe Finster-nis durchzieht das Album, aufge-hellt nur von verzerrten und dre-ckigen Gitarrenlicks, die wierhythmische Blitze in einem elek-tronischen Unwetter eine Hiero-nymus-Bosch-Landschaft erleuch-ten, bevor alles wieder geister-stundendunkel wird.

Wer die Band schon live erlebthat, der weiß, welche Rockgewit-ter die Kanadier zu entzünden inder Lage sind, doch hier ist allesnoch ein bisserl wilder und psy-chedelischer. Sucht man Verglei-che, muss man schon obskureStoner-Rock-Platten aus den frü-hen 70ern heranziehen, oderauch Neil Young & Crazy Horse inihrer Hochphase. Erstaunlich, wiegut das Organ von LeadsängerinMargo Timmins zu diesem Freak-out von Musik mit seinen Feed-backattacken, Wah-Wah-Gitarren,Rumpeltrommeln und Echokam-meralbträumen passt. Die Ladyhat richtig Power. Hören sollteman diese Platte wohl am bestenmit Kopfhörern in einem abge-dunkelten Zimmer.

Zwar können nicht alle Songsso verzaubern wie das titelgeben-de Stück, doch es gibt keinen ech-ten Durchhänger. Die Stärke derGruppe liegt in fein ziseliertenMelodien und dem markanten Ge-sang von Alin Coen. Ein bisschenweniger zünden die zwei eng-lischsprachigen Songs. Darinwirkt Coens Stimme noch ein we-nig unentschlossen.

Dann erst geht es– im Dreiviertel-Takt – in die or-chestrale Breite, während eineraue, instistente Stimme davonschwärmt, sich selbst und denganzen Himmel entflammt zu ha-ben.

„About As Helpful As You CanBe Without Being Any Help AtAll“ ist der bestechende Auftaktzu Dan Mangans neuem Album,„Oh Fortune“. „Die Welt kannmanchmal ein schwieriger Ortsein“, sagt Mangan, „und derSong handelt davon, wie man dar-in die Oberhand behält. Nicht ein-fach zu reagieren auf das, was umeinen passiert, sondern zu agie-ren.“

Der im Opener programma-tisch formulierte Imperativ zu ak-tivem Handeln zieht sich, konter-kariert von dagegen auftretendenWiderständen, als Existenzdramain neun Szenen (Songs) durch dieganze Platte. „How Darwinian“schildert das unterschwellige,nicht dingfest zu machende Unbe-hagen am Leben in einer Klein-stadt, wo Leute nicht genau wis-sen, was sie wollen – sondernnur, dass sie wollen. „Post-WarBlues“ handelt vom Posttraumati-schen Belastungsstörung-Syn-drom bei Kriegsveteranen.

„Wenn du mit einer fehlendenHand aus einem Krieg heim-

kommst, ist es sehr offensichtlich,was dein Opfer war. Aber wenndu zurückkommst und jahrelangnicht schlafen kannst, keine Be-ziehung mehr zu irgendjeman-dem aufbauen kannst, weil deinKopf so voll mit schrecklichen Bil-dern ist, dann ist das für Leuteschwerer zu begreifen. Dadurch,dass in den USA und in Kanadadie Militär-Ausgaben erhöht undgleichzeitig die medizinischenund sozialen Aufwendungen ge-kürzt worden sind, steht fürKriegsheimkehrer keine Betreu-ung mehr zur Verfügung. Kein TroubadourVerschiedene Perspektiven

Für einen 28-Jährigen beschäf-tigt sich Dan Mangan bemerkens-wert oft und viel mit dem Tod.„Immerhin ist er eine der weni-gen Gewissheiten in unserem Le-ben“, erklärt er. „Und je mehrman sich damit bewusst ausein-

andersetzt, desto besser kannman seinen Frieden mit ihmschließen, und desto besser kannman ein erfülltes Leben führen.“

Bereits mit seinem Vorgänger-Album, „Nice, Nice, Yery Nice“,hatte Dan Mangan die Anerken-nung von Kritikern gefunden und2010 eine Nominierung für denPolaris Music Prize für das bestekanadische Album des Jahres er-halten. Er befand sich damit übri-gens in Gesellschaft von Caribou,Owen Pallett oder der Broken So-cial Scene. Auf „Nice, Nice, VeryNice“ hatte sich Mangan bereitssachte von den Limitationen desFolk, von dem er herkommt, be-freit und seine Musik mit kräfti-gen Rock-Schüben auf Touren ge-bracht. Auf „Oh Fortune“ langt er,vom Produktions-Team um ColinStewart (u.a. Black Mountain)bestens beraten, verschwende-risch in die Vollen.

„Ich habe mich sicher über dieJahre recht stark verändert. Alsich jung war, war ich äußerst an-getan von der Idee, als Trouba-dour mit einer akustischen Gitar-re durch die Lande zu ziehen.Und tatsächlich bin ich jahrelangdurch die Welt gereist, habe inKaffeehäusern, kleinen Clubs undBars gespielt. Aber diesen Teilmeines Lebens habe ich hintermir gelassen. Ab einem gewissenPunkt wollte ich mehr: mehrSound, eine richtige Band. Irgend-wann hatte ich nicht mehr Platzin der Schublade ,Singer/Song-writer‘“.

„Oh Fortune“ lebt nun aller-dings so sehr von der Grandezza

und Majestät der Arrangementsund dem instrumentalen Reich-tum, dass man ein wenig um dieSongs fürchtet, wenn Mangan sie– wozu ihn Kosten-Kalkül fallwei-se zwingen wird – live nur mitspärlicher Akkustik-Ausstattungspielen kann. Songs wie „Post-WarBlues“ scheinen ohne die heftigeDynamik und das frenetische Spieldes (vom Jazz kommenden) Gitar-risten Gordon Grdina nicht vor-stellbar; selbst ruhigere Stücke,wie das ein wenig an Tim Buckleyerinnernde „How Darwinian“, wür-den ohne die fein abgestimmte In-teraktion zwischen Bläsern, Man-doline, wuchtigen Schlagzeug-Ein-sätzen, Akkustik- und E-Gitarrenwohl an Spannung verlieren.

Sparsamer LivesoundMangan gibt sich darum jedoch

unbesorgt: „Ich bin unlängst ge-tourt, ohne Drums, ohne E-Gitar-ren, nur mit ein paar Streichern,und das war sogar regelrecht be-freiend. Das Album zu machenund diesen großen Sound zu kre-ieren, war eine Sache. Auf der an-deren Seite gefällt es mir, dassSongs verschiedene Formen an-nehmen können. Wenn du die Ge-legenheit bekommst, einen Songzu performen, musst du ihm auchdie Möglichkeit geben, sich zuverändern. Mein Ziel ist weniger,Songs so zu spielen, wie sie aufder Platte sind, als ihnen eineehrliche, dem Moment angemes-sene Interpretation zukommen zulassen.“

Wie auch immer diese „ange-messene Interpretation“ klingenwird – Wien wird vorderhand dar-auf verzichten müssen. Denn diekommende, kurze Europa-Tourbringt Mangan nicht weiter ost-wärts als bis Deutschland. „Ichhabe vor Jahren einmal in Feld-kirch gespielt“, erzählt Mangan,begeisterter Bewohner der west-kanadischen Küstenstadt Vancou-ver, „was offensichtlich ein denk-bar eigenartiger Ort ist, um erst-mals in Österreich aufzutreten.Nach Wien würde ich natürlichgerne kommen – allein seiner his-torischen und kulturellen Bedeu-tung wegen.“

Proving nice guys sometimes get exactly what they deserve, Dan Mangan has spent the past couple of years living the kind of impossibly charmed—and completely surreal—life that few in the business of making music ever get to enjoy.

Sipping co!ee at South Granville’s Bean Around the World on a sun-soaked summer morning, the Vancouver-based DIY success story is happy to divulge some of the more bizarre mo-ments of what’s been a wild ride. "ere was the business of meeting Prince William and Kate Middleton in Ottawa on Canada Day a couple of months back, this coming a#er playing to a crowd of 300,000 on Parliament Hill.

At the opposite end of the celebrity spectrum, there aren’t many who can claim to have spent time with Willie Nelson and Snoop Dogg on their tour bus. Other believe-it-or-not stories to tell his future grandkids include doing SXSW with Elijah Wood, and meeting Radiohead, a band that ranks high on his list of all-time favourites.

Mangan’s 2009 breakthrough album, Nice, Nice, Very Nice—featuring his amazingly infec-tious single “Robots”—didn’t just have him hob-nobbing with the rich and famous. A#er years of playing open-mike nights in tiny co!ee shops and half-empty clubs, the singer suddenly found himself thrust onto a much larger stage, an ace backing band in tow. "ink Glastonbury (twice!) in the U.K., Sasquatch in the U.S., and the massive Woodford Folk Festival in Australia.

Tellingly though, as Mangan gets ready to release his excellent, career-reshaping third album, Oh Fortune, none of this seems to impress him much.

“I’m not a celebrity—I’m not some big Holly-wood star or anything like that,” says the 28-year-old who’s earned a well-deserved reputation as one of Vancouver’s most likable musicians. “What we do every day is very simple and real and matter-of-fact. We show up to a gig, and then we’re sound checking, then we’re eating, then playing, and then signing things a#er. "at becomes your life.

“And that brings about new challenges,” he continues. “Rather than just worrying about try-ing to get a gig or an agent someday, you learn new things to freak out about. Like ‘Am I going to totally exhaust myself? Am I going to have any-thing le# at the end of this tour? How am I going to be able to sing tomorrow if I scream tonight?

Am I eating well enough that I’m not going to turn into a waste case? Am I ever going to have time to relax? Am I ever going to have kids? Or be a rea-sonable partner for my girlfriend to be with?’ ”

Consider that fair warning that Mangan had some heavy things on his mind while he was writ-ing Oh Fortune, which hits the streets on Septem-ber 27. "e biggest one—as you might infer from song titles like “If I Am Dead” and “Regarding Death and Dying”—was the $nal curtain call that awaits each and every one of us on the planet.

“"ere are a lot of images of death on the rec-ord, of burning, of grand exits,” Mangan suggests. “"ere are lyrical throw-outs to setting yourself on $re and other grandiose gestures. Lyrically, it’s kind of a morose album.”

Mangan has a good idea why he might have been obsessed with the dark side, that having something to do with the fact that he’s been on the road con-stantly since the release of Nice, Nice, Very Nice.

“I spend a lot of time in quickly moving vehicles,” he says simply. “So many, many times I’ve imagined my own demise—I’ve got a vivid imagination in that sense. I think about it a lot. Also, the last few years have been utterly nuts—I’ve gotten to do a lot of things that many people do not get to do. I don’t mean that to be taken in a vanity sense as much as in a bewilderment sense. Like ‘Look at me singing up here—surely this has all got to end soon because it cannot last.’ ”

As he’s perfectly happy to acknowledge, there are no made-for-the-masses sing-alongs like “Ro-bots” on Oh Fortune.

“It’s a very di!erent record from Nice, Nice, Very Nice,” he says, picking at a breakfast burrito. “I think that Nice, Nice, Very Nice was the best re-cord that I could have made at the time—it really opened doors for me and the band, and changed my life. I feel that this record is less %ashy—right out of the gate, it doesn’t have as polished a feel. But I feel it’s a deeper record. It takes longer to get to know than Nice, Nice, Very Nice, but in the end I think it’s going to be a longer-lasting record.”

Mangan worked on Oh Fortune at the Hive with respected local producer Colin Stewart (Cave Singers, Black Mountain), his full-time backing band %eshed out by a small army of string, wood-wind, and horn players. "e recording process was di!erent from both Nice, Nice, Very Nice and his singer-songwriter-ish 2007 debut, Postcards

and Daydreaming.“It took me a long

time to make it—we re-corded it over about six months,” Mangan says of Oh Fortune. “Every time prior to that, when

I’d made a record, I felt rushed. I felt like we were scrambling to meet a deadline. "is time we just took things slow, but that was really healthy for me.”

"e results suggest he was indeed in a great place artistically. Oh Fortune wastes little time announ-cing its grandness, with the kick-o! track, “About as Helpful as You Can Be Without Being Any Help at All”, starting with ghostly washes of strings and then building from an elegant chamber-music waltz to an exercise in percussion-powered caba-ret pop. From there, things never stay in one place for long. "e driving “Post-War Blues” is thrillingly %ared with Williamsburg-cira-2001 guitar $reworks; “Da!odil” is half haunting Lynchian noisescape and half double-whiskeyed Waits lullaby; and “Leaves, Trees, Forest” injects gauzy alt- country with a straight-from-the-Caribbean calypso undertow. Mangan and his bandmates prove themselves as con$dent stomping on the distor-tion pedals and channelling their inner Crazy Horses (the Stand By Me–inspired “Rows of Houses”) as they are dialling things back to a round-midnight hush (“How Darwinian”).

"e singer is perfectly aware of the growth that he’s shown on Oh Fortune, the title of which was inspired by the story of swimmer Gertrude Ederle. In 1926, Ederle received a ticker-tape pa-rade in New York City not only for becoming the $rst woman to swim the English Channel, but for breaking the previous record for the crossing. Old images of the parade would prove fascinating to Mangan, to the point where, stepping back and looking at the larger picture, he sees the title Oh Fortune as encapsulating the kind of mammoth events that, if only for a moment, catch the atten-tion of the entire world, whether it be Michael Jackson dying or a man landing on the moon.

“"ose events de$ne cultures and societies, and people,” he says. “For a moment, everyone kind of turns to each other and stops. It could be some-thing good, and it could be something bad. "at, to me, is ‘Oh, fortune.’ ”

IF FANS ARE going to $nd themselves uni$ed on one thing a#er hearing Oh Fortune, it’s that Mangan has never sounded more liberated.

“I think my previous two records were eas-ily classi$ed as ‘singer-songwriter’,” he says.

“I don’t think this is a singer-songwriter record. It more just sounds like a bunch of people mak-ing music together.”

"at bunch of people includes a battery of ses-sion musicians providing the horns, strings, and woods necessary to pull o! the arrangements that Mangan commissioned from Seattle’s Eyvind Kang, a virtuoso who’s worked with everyone from Laurie Anderson and Bill Frisell to Mike Patton and Beck. As for the core group of play-ers who make up his band, if there’s one thing that the singer makes clear over the course of the interview, it’s that he couldn’t be more indebted to them. He might be the leader of the project, but it’s obvious that, in many ways, he’s in awe of the people that he takes to the stage and studio with: guitarist Gord Grdina, drummer Kenton Loewen, bassists John Walsh and Colin Cowan, trumpeter JP Carter, and keyboardist Tyson Naylor.

“When I made Nice, Nice, all those songs had been worked out on the road,” Man-

gan says. “I’d been playing them solo for a couple of years, travelling around on my own. So by the time I went into the studio, they were moulded, done, $nished—all we had to do was add some textures. "is time, I’d spent

two years travelling with the band, so, as the ideas were coming out of me,

I’d give them to the band and go, ‘What do you guys want to do with this?’ "ey come from dif-ferent schools of thought than I do when it comes to playing music, so obviously what we came up with was more expansive. In%uences of jazz, folk, indie rock, all kinds of things.”

But as much as Oh Fortune is a group e!ort, the songs begin with Mangan. If he’s understandably proud of what he’s accomplished with the record, it’s because he didn’t exactly start out as one of those Conor Oberst wunderkinds who was com-ing up with instant classics the week a#er he $rst picked up the guitar.

“It’s been a lot of hard work just to $gure out how to write a decent song,” Mangan says. “I had to write about 200 songs that were terrible $rst.”

But looking back, he remembers always lov-ing and appreciating music, to the point where he formed his $rst band, Basement Suite, back in high school on Vancouver’s West Side.

“I think our $rst gig was at the Dunbar Com-munity Centre,” he recalls. “In fact, somewhere, I think there’s a video of us playing there when we were 17 years old. We covered the Foo Fight-ers’ ‘Everlong’. "ere were, like, 12 people there, but one of my friends started crowd-sur$ng, even though there were only 12 people.
