NEWEST CHURCH
IN LUSAKA
URBAN
AREA -
CHELSTON
The most exciting
happening
in
all of Zambia in my estimation is
the new
group
of Christians
meeting in the Chelston area of
Lusaka.
Thegroup
issmall 23-28
but growing. They have been
meeting now for quite a
number
of
months in
one of the primary
schoo l
classrooms on the
west
side
of Chelston.
The
Chelston
community
lies
east
of Lusaka
about one-half the way to the
airport)
with a large, urban-type
population. We pray that God will
bless
these faithful
few
as
they
meet together in His name and
plan for th e growth of His
Kingdom
in thi s a rea.

Chelston congregation.

FURLOUGH
TIME
SOON
Can it be
true
that our time of furlough is almost here?
Augusttheeighthof
1980 seems likea very long
t ime ago,
but it
has
slipped by very
quickly
in many
ways.
We
are making plans
for
so
many
different
things right
now
that it is getting confusing. We will attend Jeff s
graduation
from RiftValley Academy in
Kenya on theway home; graduation day being
the
23rd of July, 1983. We
must
find a trustworthy party to
rent
our house to while
we are gone.
We
must
soon find a buyerforthe truck to help purchase our
tickets
home.
We ar e trying to
find the
best t icket deal possible as we travel
home.
We need a
house
or
apartment to live in while in Knoxvilleon furlough. We need to hear from all of our supporting churches
(and individuals) to make plans for reporting on
the
work here in
Zambia.
We are
trying
to accumulate
some cash for the price of the air fare home (estimated at U.S. 6000-).
These
are just a few of
the
plans
that we
are
trying to make at this time. If the Lord wills, we will be home about the 31st of July, 1983.
A
GIFT
FROM
THE
ZIMBABWE MISSIONARY
RETREATI
You
may
recall in th e October issue of the Times (Vol 2, No. 3)
that
I
was praising
our
missionary retreat
that we had jus t
returned
from in Zimbabwe. All that I said was true, but...one thing we did not mention
(and did no t knowat that time) was tha t Andrew and i had
contracted
hepatitis. We had quite a time of it
It sure felt good when it went away We are very
thankful
that it was infectious hepat it is (and not serum
hepatitis) . Praise God, we ar e both fine
now.
GARDEN
AND
KAFUE
The men
at
both
Garden and
Kafue have
just
recently
completed an
in-depth
study of th e Book of
Acts.
It was a tremendously rewarding study for all involved.
The
men werefaithful to memorize a verse out of
every chapter, and most did
very
will
on the
final test. We ar e just now trying to decide what will be
th e
subject
of
our next s tudy .
ENGLISH-SPEAKING
CHURCH
The need
for
an English-speaking church in
th e
capital of Zambia
(Lusaka)
was great.
Now
it
has
been
realized
in the new work named Berean .
The congregat ion at
Garden voted to share it s
building
with
th e new work.
The
Garden
church
a ls o moved its
time
of
services
to 11:30 so the English work
could
begin at 9:30. The
first Sunday
(16 January)
found
42 present. Itwas a wonderful day for
the
Lord here at
Lusaka. Please
pray fo r
Dean and Judy Davis as they devote
their full efforts
toward
the
establishment
of
this
new congregation.

Hello again 1am now InZambia's 9th grade and am quitebusy with school work and all Friday
nights are restful times since we kids have what we call Friday Night Happenings . Atthis time
we
come together
at someone's
house.
We have afew
games,
some In
groups
and
some
Inpairs,
and
then have a Bible study. We
also
sing different songs -
sometimes around
a
camp
fire. When
closing
the
Bible time, a few people will pray. There are refreshments, and then we can play
what we want. The Friday night activity lasts from 7:00 to 9:00. We are growing
more
in
God
each time,
and
a
strong, happy
fellowship with others Is formed.
Do you remember that I told you I
thought
our black dog. Ebony, was going to have puppies?
Well, she did She had 9 puppies. It
was
a lot of fun. but it
was also
a big mess My
Papa
said that
he was glad
they
were gone I
wonder
why he said
that?
Now, Ebony's daughter, Baby Sister, is

AS WE LEFT
ZAMBIA
Naturally we were excited over the fact that it was time to come home to
family and friends on our first furlough; at the same time it is true to say that
we were going to miss Zambia. During that three-year period (Aug. 1980-July
1983
we grew to love and respect many, many Zambian Christian friends.
In 1980 the church at fvlunguwas not meeting - inactive. Their bush building
had
fallen down.
Because there
was one Christian family still
Interested
in
spreading the Good News in that area God re-established His church there.
First, the old building was rebuilt, then later a new buildingwas constructed on
a new plot. By late June of 1983,just before we left to come home, the Mungu
church registered a new, record attendance of 88. Recent reports mention
that it continues to grow. I promised the members there that we would begin a
buildingexpansion program as soon as they filled the newbuilding. Italmost
happened
before
we left
The church
at Makuku
(the
pork
processing
farm) in
the
Southern
Province
needs our special prayers. After helping this group get started in 1981 it grew
to an average attendance of 50-60. Just before we left to come home on
furlough, we heard the bad news that the pork plant had closed - resulting in
some unemployment. The farm is to continue as a corn and cotton farm, but
the outlook for the church is in question. Shortly after we arrived In the U.S.we
heard that another religious
group
was putting
pressure
on
our
members to
join
them. If youdonot join us, you
will
receive no food. What cantheydo?
If that does
not
seem like enough
trouble, we learned recently
from one of our
Zambian
leaders in Kafue tha t the
main leader
there
had taken
another wife -
polygamy. Please pray specifically concerning these problems at Makuku.
The
church In
the urban part
of Lusaka at
Chelston continues
to
excite
us
because they are excited. Because of the dreams of one Christian family in
Lusaka (at the Matero church), the Chelston
group
had grown to an average,
when we left, of 55-60. Ifeel that this group will be a vital Christian voice In the
capital city of the country of Zambia. They are so excited about personal
evangelism. I rarely ever need to suggest ideas of growth or witnessing to
them. They are usually asking me: when, or where, or whatll After many,
many hours of interviews,
filling
out forms, traveling to and from the
Development Secretary's Office in the CivicCenter, and the Commissioner of
Lands' Office at
the
Department of Lands, walking over plot after plot, trying to
find
one
that
was sui table
and available, and
after many hours
of
prayer
-
seeking God's blessing and guidance on the matter of building plots, the Lord
gave us a wonderful plot to plan our building on there. I signed
the
papers,
accepting the plot the day before we left Zambia. I was walking over the
property looking for survey pins the day we flewout from Lusaka. Weheard,
by report, that the members have already begun clearing the land anticipating
our return in July of 1984 and the actual start of construction. We ask you to
be in prayer about this
proposed
building. We will
need one-time
cash gifts
from you in
order
to build there. We estimate
the
need of approximately
30,000 in order to meet the city building
codes,
etc.
