To be eligible for this award, students must have completed over 95 hours and be projected to graduate during the 2010 calendar year. Students are selected based on academics; Texas A&M University leadership activities; community involvement, professional and civic activities; employment, internship and research; and a written essay . Jennings was a member of the Texas A&M M All American Livestock Judging Team, the Wool Judging Team and the Saddle & Sirl loin Club, served as vice president of finance for the COALS Student Council, and was named as a Texas A&M President’s Endowed Scholarship recipient. He worked as a sales and research intern for Elanco Animal Health in a sales and research intern for Elanco Animal Health in Greenfield, Ind. Upon graduation, Jennings plans to attend graduate school and study meat and muscle biology . Smith served as president of the Saddle & Sirloin Club, and was a member of the COALS Student Council, the Department of Animal Science Aggie REPS and the Meats Judging Team where she also served as a coach for the Brazos County 4-H Meats Judging Team. Smith also was one of 47 Aggies selected as Who’s Who Among College Students. Upon graduation, Smith hopes to work for a branded beef program. Kenney was a member of the Texas A&M Wool and HorseEvaluation Teams, a member of theCOALS Student Council and servedas an Aggie REP for the department.In addition, she participated in theUndergraduate Research ScholarsProgram, received her American FFA Degree in 2009 and was awarded theAll-American Horse Judging Awardin January 2010. Upon graduation,Kenney plans to attend graduateschool and study nutrition. Burns served as president andCEO of the Memorial Student Center,a Maroon Coat through the TexasA&M Foundation, and is a memberof Phi Kappa Phi. She also served as

an equine undergraduate researchstudent and assistant, was nameda National Society of CollegiateScholar, as well as awarded the Buck Weirus Spirit Award in April 2009.Upon graduation, Burns will spend

two years in the Teach For America Program.

Santistevan served as the vice president of the Golden Key International Honor Society, wasa member of the COALS Student Council, and also served as a student ambassador for the 2009 China-USRelations Conference in Beijing.Upon graduation, she plans to moveback to Bolivia to spread the awarenessof agriculture.

was presented to animal sciencemajor Katie Muehlstein of Kerrvillein recognition of an outstandingrecord of academic achievement anddistinguished leadership.

Muehlstein is a member of theTexas A&M Wool Judging Team, theSaddle & Sirloin Club and Collegiate4-H. She also is a part of MSC Fish,a select group of freshmen who arededicated to leadership and serviceprojects throughout the community.

Saddle & Sirloin Club spring banquet was held at the BrazosCounty Expo Complex on April 17, 2010. The banquet isthe culminating event for the club’s year of activities, andmany members and contributors are recognized for theiraccomplishments. Highlights include:

2010 honorary members namedThe Brazos County Expo Center was named this year’sSaddle & Sirloin Club honorary member. The ExpoCenter has shown great support for the S&S Club andthe activities held at this location including the S&S Steer,Heifer and Pig Futurity and the annual banquet.

Riley recognized for outstanding serviceRay Riley, Rosenthal Center manager, was honored withthe outstanding service recognition. KATY & FORT WORTH, TEXAS -- The Texas A&M Horse Judging Team took fi rst place at the Na-tional Reining Breeder’s Classic held in Katy on April 17, 2010. The team led the fi eld of seven teams by 250 points, de-feating West Texas A&M Univer-sity, second; Iowa State University, third; and University of Wyoming, fourth and fi fth. The Aggies secured fi ve of the top 10 high individual spots, led by fi rst high individual Leslie Wagner. Adrienne Paquette fi n-ished second, Erin Grace, third; Brooke Byrd, fi fth and Lauren Fulce, sixth. Amanda Zuniga placed 13th. In other competition, the

Horse Judging Team placedfourth at the American Paint Horse Spring Sweepstakes in Fort Worth on April 22.

Rounding out the top fi ve wereVirginia Tech team A, fi rst; KansasState University, second; Virginia Tech, third; and Oklahoma State University, fi fth.

A&M won sec-ond high team in performance and fourth high team in reasons.

Inaugural Spirit of Aggieland Sale draws large crowd

The Inaugural Spirit of Aggieland Sale held on April 18, 2010 at the TexasA&M University Beef Center sold cattle to all regions of Texas and four otherstates and averaged $2939 on 48 lots. The sale was held in conjunction withguest consignors who have been past donors to the program and offered Elitegenetics that consisted of donor cows, fl ushes, frozen genetics and bulls. Stu-dents and Beef Center staff worked at the sale under the guidance of managerPaul Maulsby.

S&S Club, Ag Workers Insurance host student seminar

The Saddle & Sirloin Club and Ag Workers Insurance hosted a student lead-ership seminar called “Careers in Agriculture” at the Texas A&M University Beef Center on April 22, 2010. More than 140 students attended and en-joyed a catered meal by Fuddruckers. Guest speakers included Mark Ellison,associate vice chancellor for economic development for Texas A&M; WarrenMayberry, government affairs manager for DuPont Agricultural Products;and Bryan Daniel, vice president of Agricultural Workers Insurance Com-pany. The seminar was coordinated by Chris and Misty Skaggs. Ag WorkersInsurance sponsored the event.

Sterle trains retailers onPork Quality Assurance Plus programDr. Jodi Sterle, associate professor andExtension swine specialist, trained theNational Pork Board’s retail advisory committee in the Pork Quality Assur-ance Plus program. Representatives from major re-tailers include Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club,Safeway Foods, Kroger and others.The National Pork Board recently up-dated the quality assurance program,reinforcing the importance of properuse of antimicrobials in swine produc-tion, as well as increasing emphasison animal care and well being.
