Firman Allah S.W.T:

Sipping my final drops of my coffee, I was about to have forty winksin my bunk when suddenly all the twenty firemen in the brigade were alertedby an emergency announcement. Loudly, the black speaker shouted that aby passer had reported a fire which broke out at an apartment at CrossfieldStreet.

“Isn’t that my apartment?” my heart whispered. My heart was thenbeating like a runaway train.

***

Sirens wailed and two fire trucks announced their arrival. Lady luck certainly was not on my side asI was flabbergasted to see my apartment drowning in flames. It was twilight time and the thick blacksmoke which was rising against the brilliant red western sky presented quite a spectacle. The column ofblack smoke, magnificent yet ominous, pervaded the bright firmament of the sky. The sight of the fifty-footflames shooting upwards was indeed blinding. There and then, a daunting question dawned upon me.

Where is my Mom now?

Cold sweats moistened my palms as I felt a chill running down my spine. Looking at the fury of theflames, I could already sense a bad omen but I immediately brushed it aside. Mom suffered from lapsesof memory after she was diagnosed with severe Alzheimer’s disease. Our family doctor had repeatedlytold me to watch over my ailing mother and let my career take the back seat. Mom was a house makerand she was fond of becoming oblivious to the boiling kettle in the kitchen or even the chip pan whichshe often left unattended. However, due to professional integrity, I held firm to my job, leaving Mom tofend for herself while I went to work every day.

So could it be this time?

Five or six streams of silvery water were arching pathetically at the charred apartment. Mind me, thiswas the most fearsome fire outbreak which I had personally encountered myself. The heat was so intensethat my colleagues did not dare to approach it, much less trying to extinguish the fire. However, Ben andMark were busy salvaging lives from the parts of the building where the heat was less intense. I who wascrouching behind the fire truck, walked over to the group of evacuees, squeezing between them to see ifMom was one of them. None. Negative. Fire continued licking the building hungrily and mercilessly.

I could not hold back anymore. I needed to see Mom now itself. Without further deliberation, I equippedmyself with the closest item I could reach. A sledgehammer. Having my safety helmet and fireproof suitintact, I was ready to put my life in the biggest gamble on a perilous attempt to save the person dearestto me. Deep inside, I was swallowed by my own regrets. Regrets of leaving my mother unattended.

As I was about to enter the building, I felt a strong grip on my shoulder. It was Brigadier Michael. Hewas drumming into me that any silly attempt to save lives from the building would be lethal. However, Iinsisted vehemently and my abrupt decision left everyone aghast. Mom once said when I was little, “Youpay for your own mistakes.”. I was ready to have my mistake justified.

Soon, I found myself in the building. Ferocious flames and tumbled structures greeted my arrival. The

entire lobby seemed unrecognisable. I quickly found my way to the emergency staircase, which had smallparts of it dissolved in flames. I had to be quick.

I mustered my courage and ran all the way to the fifth floor. Whole walls which came falling downnever ceased to trouble me, but I kept firm with my motive. Beads of sweat were trickling down myglistening forehead as I felt claustrophobic in my helmet.

Upon reaching my house, I gathered my strength and wedged open the front door. My home, once mycomfortable abode, had been reduced to ashes. Only some of the concrete pillars stood firm, but theywere all counting their final minutes before they too tumbled altogether. I cautiously walked through thedebris, side stepping the wooden planks which had fallen, desperately sniffing for life amidst hopelessness. Then I saw a figure, almost motionless, lying on the rocking chair at the balcony. Fear gripped me as Iapproached the figure.

MOM!

I could feel her heartbeats. There was still life. She was wheezing heavily, probably due to the excessiveinhalation of smoke which had been seeping into the house since half an hour ago. Quickly, I had her onmy back, comforting her semi-conscious soul, all the time making short conversations to keep her alive.

When I was out of the house, I felt weak and dumbfounded. Everywhere around me were red hotflames. The fire must have spread fast as I saw flames creeping onto curtains and wooden floors.Deciphering Mom’s soft words, she wanted me to leave her as she might put my life in utter jeopardy.

“No one is leaving anybody today. You told me that I pay for my own mistake. I AM AND I WILL!”Those words abruptly uttered from my mouth gave me an ounce of courage to conquer the flames.

The window. I saw the window at the end of the corridor. I saw fresh hopes. I trudged on energeticallyand was all the time praying to the Big Man. To my biggest fear, I saw small embers starting to creeptowards the gas tank which someone left a few steps away from the window. I held Mom so tightly andwas ready to dive from a height of approximately forty foot. I was too late. I witnessed myself the gastank which exploded and both Mom and I were thrown out of the window.

I couldn’t recall much. My vision was smothered by smoke. I could not see Mom. I collapsed.

***

I woke up to the smell of antiseptics and found my body resting comfortably on the hospital bed.Surveying my surroundings, I could see my colleagues standing around my bed. They didn’t look happy atall. None of them. I felt a throbbing pain at the back of my head as I struggled to sit up. Then BrigadierMichael broke the news about my Mom. She suffered severe damages when we landed on the ground andthe doctor was not certain if she could see her tomorrow.

I was puzzled. My thoughts ran wild. With the help of my colleagues, I sat on a wheelchair and racedto the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) where Mom was warded.

There, I saw an old lady, lying on the bed, paler than ever. Tubes tangled all over her body and thescreen read extremely slow heartbeats. She was unconscious. Life was extremely fragile.

I tried to scream but my throat froze. I cried but there were no tears. I had made the biggest mistakein my life. Pondering on the ‘should’ve’ and ‘shouldn’t’, I held my Mom’s wrinkled hand, giving her warmthand hope. I was extremely sorry as I grieved over my negligence. I wanted Mom to wake up. I hoped Iwould be forgiven in time.

“Annie, say hello to Poppy”, Maggie said as she presented a doll toher daughter.

“Wow, is this for me? She’s so pretty!” exclaimed Annie as she tookthe doll from her mother’s outstretched arms.

Poppy was indeed a pretty doll. Her face was crafted out of fineporcelain, with painted red lips and blue glassy eyes. Her frock was ondyed silk in yellow that gave it shimmering effect in the sunlight. The arms and legs too, were made ofporcelain which gave it a smooth texture, reminiscent to that of baby skin. Brown hair topped with agold-coloured bow adorned her head. Overall, the doll looked rather life like.

“Thank you, mommy!” Annie said as she ran off with her new prize, no doubt off to the tea set toplay.

Maggie eyed Annie as she left. She felt guilty, but she knew this was the best way. Annie’s fathermysteriously disappeared three years ago, when Annie was three. Since then, Maggie had been living thelife of a single mother, working two jobs a day to pay rent for the miserable hovel they called home andto send Annie to school. Being caught up with the responsibilities of motherhood, she had to time forAnnie who was constantly alone and friendless. Maggie had procured the doll from an old woman in arun-down shack on the edges of town.

“This pretty thing will make the perfect friend for your little one”, the old crone had said with a gap-toothed grin.

Although Maggie was slightly repulsed by the old woman’s appearance and the lingering smell of ginmixed with the odour of dead things, she purchased the doll.

“The perfect friend…” The words of the old woman tugged at her conscience, sending ripples of guiltthrough Maggie.

“Someday, I will be perfect friend too”, Maggie told herself regretfully as she watched Annie scamperoff with Poppy.

Setting her down on the tea table, Annie asked “would you like some tea, Poppy?” For a moment,Annie did nothing but stare at Poppy, marveling at the fine features and obvious craftsmanship.

Then the doll spoke.

“Yes, please, Annie”, said Poppy in a voice that seemed to resonate in Annie’s head, childlike andhigh-pitched.

Annie was astounded. The doll spoke to her. Annie thought this must be her childish dream cominginto fruition, after all the stories she read on Enid Blyton’s magical world of living toys.

“You can talk?” whispered Annie.

“Of course, Annie; I will be your perfect friend!”, replied Poppy.

Annie was beside herself with joy. What Maggie was unaware of is that Annie had no friends at all,not even at kindergarten. Children there made fun of her because she had no father and a mother thatonly seemed to flit in and out of existence; never truly solid in Annie’s life. But now, that was all going tochange. Annie finally had a person to talk to, to play with and someone who will actually talk back toher now. As she stared into Poppy’s shining eyes, she found herself completely entranced.

Friendship

229

Annie was never letting go of Poppy.

The bell for recess sent a peal of sharp rings through the building. Throughout the modest structure, which was once and old Victorian bungalow, children fled from their classes, excited by the prospect ofescaping the scourge of lessons for the next half an hour. Annie ventured out of the classroom last, clutchingPoppy with both hands. The entire day in class, she had been whispering to it, occasionally giggling. Whenthe teacher tried to take the doll from her, she would burst into noisy, copious tears, and would inconsolableuntil the return of her doll.

Walking down the hallway, she was talking to Poppy about a programme that was on television theprevious night.

“I didn’t know! Did you?” Annie asked the doll, and the placed its face next to her ear in a listeningfashion.

She failed to notice a large boy standing nearby. She also failed to notice as he approached; failed tosee the aggression in his eyes. The boy named Ben and he was a classmate of Annie. He was usually theone who tormented Annie by pulling her hair or pouring paint on her blouse. Ben thought Annie was anabsolute freak, and today, even more so with the incessant conversations with an inanimate object.

By the time she espied his presence, it was too late. Ben knocked the doll right out of Annie’s handsand proceeded to stomp on Poppy’s porcelain visage. Cracking sounds could be heard from under his sole.

“What’s wrong with you? Dolls can’t talk!” he sneered.

Annie screamed protestations at him, telling him her doll was special and that she really could talk, butBen was already on his way elsewhere, sniggering at his own achievement.

In the shadowy halls, there Annie stood alone with her violated toy at her feet. Poppy was silent.

The slamming of the front door told Maggie that Annie had returned from school. Maggie was in mid-sentence, about to ask how her day was, but she ran to her room and locked the door behind her. Anniedidn’t see her mother’s worried face; she was too consumed with grief at the loss of her new friend to seeanything.

Annie fell asleep on her pillow soaked with tears, with Poppy at the foot of her bed; her pretty faceunable to mask the ugly cracks.

Ben was still marveling at his handiwork during the day. He was strolling down the street, tossing sweetsin his mouth. He had snuck out of home in the dead of the night to purchase them from a store in town.A self-congratulatory reward for yet another successful attempt at breaking that freak’s spirit. The street wasdimly lit by only one or two streetlights, casting the area in more shadow than light.

“You shouldn’t have upset Annie today”, a voice sliced through the silence.

Ben swiveled around in surprise but also in defiance, to challenge whoever had said that, but hiscondescending expression quickly turned into a mask of fear as a knife plunged into his heart. Blood soakedhis shirt and splattered on the sidewalk. He fell hard onto the concrete, limbs splayed in the pool of red.The last thing he saw was a flash of gold silk.

Back at Annie’s home, Annie still lay asleep. Maggie was watching her through a crack in the door, herexpression one of pain and remorse.

She shut the door behind her and headed back to her own room; Poppy in one hand, a knife in theother, and locked them both in a dresser.

“Someday, I will be your perfect friend”, whispered Maggie.

The Ship from India had finally docked in Georgetown after weeks and weeksof sailing. Having to sail through vicious monsoon winds, the ship was jammed withIndians who were anxiously waiting to earn a fortune. However, what they did notknow was that it was all nothing but a pool of lies. A brutal life ahead was awaitingthe pitiful souls. Once they were given their respective duties to work in estatesand in mining areas, only then had they realized that they had fallen into a massivetrap. After all the sacrifice, brutality and struggle they had been through, loyal citizensof Malaysia experienced a drastic change on August 31st that changed their livesforever.

It had turned out fortunate for me today that destiny appointed Georgetown to be my birthplace. The first breathI took, my first sight, was in the island of ancestors first placed their feet on Tanah Melayu. At the tender age ofthree, there came a certain “time of the year” where I came across advertisements on television in between TotallySpies that captured a middle-aged man with ‘songkok’ standing ambitiously in the heart of a huge stadium filled withpeople cheering as he hailed the word “Merdeka” thrice. Whenever I took a glimpse outside the aisle, there wereMalaysian flags hanging along the streets, breath taking decorations on buildings as well as vehicle were a feast forthe eye that gazes.

One fine day, my parents decided to bring my sister and I to a massive birthday celebration. I rose early thatmorning, put on my little black dress and hopped into the car. Once we reached, I was pretty disappointed with thescenario as it was not what I expected at all. Where were the clowns, piñatas, cakes, balloons, and my small friends? All I could see were legs and debris on the ground. Just when I was yet to tear up, squeeze my mom’s hand andstomp my feet, an enormous float entirely decorated with fresh flowers crawled its way. I quickly pestered my fatherto carry me and when I reached the top, my jaws dropped to the ground! A huge army tank similar to the ones inmovies and uniform bodies marching across were simply mind blowing. As a girl, I never liked pink skirts or Barbie’s.What truly made my day was 14 years ago, were the handsome army men flaunting their extraordinary skills with theirguns. Towards the end of the ceremony, the crowd cheered as the Perak Sultan hailed the word “Merdeka” thrice justin the commercials. Confetti was dropping on my curling hair, fireworks, flags and continuous gun shots ended thecelebration. Well, it wasn’t a bad birthday party after all. Years later, I realized that the memorable party was thecelebration held in conjunction with the birth of my homeland.

Fast forward a year, I was a pre-schooler. For a five-year old kid, I have to day that I was indeed very brave andindependent. As I continued to embrace my inner talent in pre-school itself, I was appointed to deliver a speech atthe school’s annual concert. Having to present a 5 minute speech about my country, holding a microphone I couldbarely wrap my tenderly fingers around in front of hundreds of parents was somewhat overwhelming. I developed rapidlyin a speaker’s direction and by the time I was eleven, I had come to differentiate good and evil, understand patriotismand moulded into a well-known public speaker in school. It never hurts to turn back and take a look at where it allbegan. They say, “a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. As for me, it began with a single speech. The influence of great politicians and national speakers has enlarged my enthusiasm for speaking. Never did I imaginethat a simple speech on Malaysia’s cultural diversity could change my life. No matter how talented a person can be,without encouragement and moral support from loved ones, one would not succeed in life. Apart from that, the countrytoo plays a role in supporting its citizens. The vulnerability of Malaysia to accept diversity simply by not judging a personby their appearance, race, religion and social status has to be that key ingredient to our nation’s and my very ownsuccess. Malaysia represents a country that emphasizes on its people’s priority just like its motto “People first, performance now”.

Malaysia as I know it is a strategic country shielded by an embroidery of mountains from vicious monsoon windsand a land so calm undisturbed by natural disasters. Everyday when I wake up, I utter a silent prayer to be living in aland that does not crush my home, to be living in a country free from grief hunger, war and pain. Subjectively, Malaysiato me is far more than a country famous for its durians, its “nasi lemak” or its diverse cultures. It’s a place where mymemories lay carved in every nook and cranny. Born as a “Penangite” and grew in a small town famously known as“Ipoh Mali”, gives me the inspiration to love my motherland from an angle invisible to others. I’m proud to be Malaysianfor the sole reason of how it has metamorphosed me to become the person I am now, because with the little puzzlecalled Malaysia, these recollection would carry no character to this story or many other stories that hold my dearestmemory.

For many of us, the British were nothing to atrocious people who rules our country. However, coming tothink of it, I thank God every second of my life that hundreds of years ago, my ancestors were brought toMalaya through the “Kangani” system to serve the British. Had they not done that, I possible wouldn’thave ended in such a beautiful country. Malaysia and I have spent a noteworthy of 18 years. Nothing, noteven the strongest force can tear us apart and I feel most sheltered here in my home, Malaysia!

HEREin MY HOME

231

I was at a tender age of four months old when I first breathed the air ofMalaysia in the year of 1995. According to my mother, it was a breezy morningwhile music from the parade and cheers from the crowd could be heard nearKuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). It was 31st of August, the NationalDay when our country welcomed me to be one of her citizens. Since then, Ilive in Malaysia, I was raised here and all of my life experiences were acquiredfrom every moment I spent here. I am so thankful that God placed me andmy family in this beautiful country shaped by her diverse culture and heritage.

The amazing history of our warriors and the faces of inspirational youth fought for a brighter future areone of the top reasons that I am so proud to call her my homeland. Back in the 1940s, Tanah Melayu wasinvaded by the Japanese army and my grandparents used to tell me what they had been through in the darkage. Sweet potatoes were all they eat and children would die from illness like Malaria and some even fromstarvation. Yet, the spirit of Malaysian was so strong that they never give up in protecting the pride of ourhomeland. The invaders may take our homeland by force but they can never burn our spirits to ashes. Listeningto the history of the country had given me an injection of motivation to love our sovereign Malaysiawholeheartedly.

Malaysia is a wonderful country with unique islands and beaches. For example, Langkawi Island is renownedfor its beautiful beaches with fine and white sand. Besides this, there is a diverse species of animals and plantlife in Malaysia’s rain forest. In addition, Malaysia is a blissful land which mother nature exempted her from itstantrum. For instance, Malaysia stands proud among the countries of the world because she is free fromdisastrous tsunamis and earthquakes, no hurricanes and typhoons. Consequently, there is no need for Malaysianto live in fear of nature’s sudden fury. Furthermore, there is plentiful of sunshine and rainfall which contributedto the harvests in Malaysia. Thus, Malaysians are empowered to pursue lifestyles of their own liking.

The cultural values of my homeland is undeniably outstanding. Malaysia is a multiracial country with 28.33million of population which can be categorised as 50.4% of Malays, 23.7% of Chinese, 11% of indigenous, 7.1% of Indians and 7.8% of other ethnic groups. Meanwhile, the diversity factor can never weaken our bond ofbeing the citizens of Malaysia under the 1 Malaysia concept. Malaysia is a place boast of a rich cultural heritagebecause of the diversity of races, religions and cultures. Basically, each ethnic group has distinct performing arts. For instance, the Malays’ ‘Wayang Kulit’, the Chinese’s traditional lion dance while the Indians brought art formssuch as ‘Bhangra dance’. Malaysia’s cuisines also reflect the multiethnic make up of her population. Besides this, the value of traditional sports such as ‘Wau’, ‘Gasing’ and ‘Dragon-Boat Racing’ cannot be overlooked. The manydifferent ethnicities that currently exist in Malaysia have their own distinctive cultural identities and this is whatmakes Malaysia an unique country.

Meanwhile, my friends who live in other countries would always express their admiration towards Malaysiabecause of her stability and unity of the various races. Indeed, it is a norm for every Malaysian to stand togetheras one tribe and protect her without reservation. Since the early independence of Malaysia, the caliber politicalfigures succeeded to unite the Malaysians under our national language which is ‘Bahasa Malaysia’. The unity ofthe people of Malaysia backs my claim. Consequently, the economy of Malaysia is booming because every raceis willing to cooperate with one another to reach the aim of Vision 2020. Besides this, the country has hadmany reputable international achievements. For instance, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia is home to the Petronas TwinTowers, the tallest twin buildings in the world. It has become an iconic symbol of Malaysia’s futuristicdevelopment.

In Malaysia, I feel secure and I feel warmth in my heart. This is the feeling I have when I live in Malaysia. There is an old saying goes ‘Patriotism is a thing of the heart, a man is a patriot if his heart beats true to thiscountry’. My country, Malaysia is my homeland. Yes, and I will never ever deny this until my very last breath.

My Malaysia,MY HOMELAND

232

Helo kepada semua,As many of you might know by now,

my name is Anirudh, and I am anexchange student from Houston, Texas,U.S.A. I have been in Malaysia for justabout 3 months, but my experienceshave been a lifetime’s worth ofmemories! I would like to share some ofmy favorite moments and experiencesfrom these past few months and give youa little bit of insight into my view ofMalaysia!

First of all, I want to explain why I’mhere. My program, called YES Abroad, issponsored by the U.S. Department ofState and sends high school studentsfrom the U.S. to countries withsignificant Muslim populations. I havecome to Malaysia to learn aboutMalaysian culture and to give localMalaysians insight into the U.S. andAmerican culture. So far, I’ve learnedmuch about Malaysia and its religions, languages, and traditions, and I’ve beenable to spread knowledge of life inAmerica and typical parts of Americanculture.

I arrived in KL on July 18, and I cameto Ipoh on July 21. Starting school and myexperience here seemed to be a dauntingtask at first, but I’ve learned so muchand had so much fun during my timehere. Over the last few months, I haveintegrated into my host family, schooland environment. It’s been an amazingexperience, so much so that I remembermy arrival as if it were yesterday, not 3months ago.

So far in Malaysia, I have had thepleasure of doing so many amazingactivities, attending so many memorableevents, and meeting many great people.I visited Buddhist and Hindu temples, celebrated Merdeka and Hari Malaysia, met the Menteri Besar and Raja Muda ofPerak, visited the U.S. Embassy in KL,went snorkeling in Pangkor, ate mooncakes during the Mid-Autumn Festival, and much more. All of these experienceshave given me memories that I willcherish all my life.

One specific activity I took part inwas celebrating the week of Hari Rayawith a Muslim family. During the last fewdays of Ramadan, I fasted with thefamily, watched Malay soap operas, andgenerally, lived as they did. On the day ofRaya, I visited many of the family’srelatives in a kampung a few hours awayfrom Ipoh. There, I was treated with somuch respect and appreciation, and Igot to truly experience Malay Muslimculture. At the door, I was warmlywelcomed by the sounds of peoplesaying, “Selamat Hari Raya! Apa namaawak?” To which I would reply, “Tak bolehcakap banyak Bahasa Melayu. Sila cakapperlahan!” During the gathering, thefamily members offered me so much food(I ate lunch 3 times that day…) and gaveme so much duit Raya that both mystomach and my pockets were filled! Iloved this experience so much because Itruly gained a wealth of appreciationand understanding about a new culture. At the same time, I was able to educatethe people there about the U.S. andcommon American values. I am so happyI participated in the celebration, and Iwill never forget the time I spent withthe host family.

One of the best parts of myexperience is school. Monday throughFriday (and occasionally Saturday), I getto come to school for 5-6 hours per day.Experiencing an entire new system ofschooling has been pretty cool, but thestudents and teachers have been whathas made my school life so fun! All of myclassmates are kind, funny, curious andpatient, and I’ve met great people fromother classes as well!

Outside of school, the mostincredible part of my experience so farhas been observing the variety ofcultures and values that Malaysia is sofamous for. To put things in perspective,I want to bring up a conversation I washaving with a volunteer for my programsoon after I arrived. I recall asking herwhy Malaysia was “truly Asia.” Now, I amable to see how that saying applies. Ihave seen mosques, churches, and

temples on the same street. In myneighborhood, I have seen Chinese altarsand Hindu words of prayer in the yards ofthe houses, noticed the scent of nasilemak and durian, and heard the Azancalling Muslims to pray. In my classalone, I have heard Malay, English,Mandarin, Cantonese, Hokkien, Tamil, and Punjabi being spoken. I feel that thisdiversity is what makes Malaysia trulyAsia!

I hope that my writing hasinterested you. If you are eager to visitthe U.S. one day or go there on exchange, the YES Program also sends Malaysianstudents to the U.S. after Form 5 forabout 6 months. I recommend lookinginto the program, as it leaves you with alife time’s worth of friends andmemories!

Finally, if you are interested inkeeping yourself updated with my stay inMalaysia, I am writing about myexperiences on my blog called Journey tothe Silver State of Malaysia at thefollowing web address: http://fromtexastomalaysia.blogspot.com

I will be updating my blog regularlyto keep my followers informed about myexperiences here. Please feel free tolook it up and read about my adventuresand what I have learned while here! Also, don’t hesitate to ask me any questionsyou have about my experience here, myblog, or the U.S. in general. I’d be happyto answer them!

I want to thank you all for acceptingme into your school and helping to makemy experience so amazing!Terima kasih kerana baca ini!

Marian Library was built during the early years of our school. When Brother Vincent first came to SMI from Singapore in theearly 1958, he was shocked that there was no library in our school. He realised that the school was in need of a library. However, there was not any space available for a library. However, threeclasses on the second floor were combined and a library was builtand it was called ‘Marian Library’. The name Marian Library waschosen because St. Michael is a Catholic school. Coincidentally, thatyear was the Marian year, so our library was named after themother of Jesus, Mary.

In the early years of the library, there was no furniture in thelibrary at all. Tables were taken from the exam hall and the libraryoperated everyday until 10 o’clock only. It was a free access, withno supervisor in the library back then.

In 1968, a significant big change happened. A Sixth formPhysics teacher by the name of Mr Choong Kui Lam volunteeredto run the library, introducing the Dewey Decimal System for thelibrary. New cupboards were purchased and librarians wereemployed. However, after accomplishing his mission, Mr Choongresigned from his teacher post and migrated to Australia in toopen a restaurant.

The Year 1969 was one of the most important years to ourMarian Library. With the combined financial help from the parents, teachers and old students as well, the Marian Library was able togenerate sufficient sum of money to upgrade the facilities of thelibrary with new books, new shelves and new furniture. Due tothe upgrading of the library and the student’s enthusiasm inreading, the Marian Library had to be open from morning to night. In addition, some students have treated it as their second home.

‘The Falcon and the Falconer’ - one of the greatest sculptureof Brother Joseph Mc Nally, was built in 1975. It took severalmonths to complete and costs a lot of money. In selecting histheme, Brother Joseph found himself attracted to the followinglines by his favourite poet, William Butler Yeats,

‘Turning and turning in the widening gyre. The falcon cannot hear the falconer.Things fall apart ; the centre cannot hold.Mere anarchy is loose upon the world. The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere. The best lack all conviction, while the worst. Are full of passionate intensity.’

Life is short. So when you dream, YOUDREAM BIG.Never in our wildest dreams did we everthink that the last participation form whichwe grabbed from the teacher’s tableduring a regular Physics class would leadto such an unimaginably awesomecreation, the creation of BOLT (Boat OfLight Transfer), a solar-powered boat andalso a proud to be St. Michael’sInstitution’s first ever solar-powered boat.Making a boat out of scratch was alreadymind-blogging, but now, making afunctional boat model which moves withthe aid of solar energy certainly did notease the challenge. As the pioneer solarboat was due to launch in less than twoweeks, I as the appointed leader, handpicked another two team memberswho were Abdul Mukhriz Nur Iman andOng Jet Huei. Having knew the outline ofthe competition, we began our workspontaneously.Frankly, our team could not have beganwith useful resources from Google, as theproject was totally alien to all three of us.Patiently and meticulously, we found a fewdesigns which caught our eyes and thus,we began making a few simple drafts ofthe boat. Aerodynamic. Speed. Solarenergy. Just to name some of the wordswhich lingered in our minds as we drewsome plans. After much deliberationamong ourselves, we chose the BOLTdesign based on some related physicsconcepts and its aesthetic value, of course. There wasn’t much talking anymore assoon we got to work. Supplied with onsolar panels and a motor, there was somuch more we have to look for before wecould start the boat assembly. Soon after,we managed to salvage for some unusedpolystyrene boards from the staffroom andalso some bits and pieces which come inhandy too. It was quite a tedious task butno worries, our teacher advisor Puan WanNorliza was ever ready to spare some ofher time to guide us. Not forgetting tomention is Puan Seri Ayu who bombardedus with her constructive critics before wesuccessfully created the Michaelian marvel.Up next was the testing of BOLT before wehead for the preliminary rounds thefollowing day. We all felt the tension in theair. Was BOLT able to move? Some curiousMichaelians gathered around the man-made swimming pool, some biting their

fingernails as they anticipated for thetest round. Who have knew our faithfulBOLT completed the 2m track withinFOUR seconds only! That marked our firstsuccess. Then the red-letter day had finallyarrived for BOLT. 11th of May. At the crackof dawn, we reached SMI Pinji, all havinghigh hopes to win a silverware for theschool. Mind me, I was having that chillrunning down my spine right after I knewthat we we’re facing schools which werefar more experienced than us. SekolahIzzudin Shah, Methodist Girl’s School,Anglo-Chinese School and Ave MariaConvent (just to state a few) were ourrivals of the day. Before we raced thetracks, our PowerPoint Presentationdeserved a big round of applause fromthe audience, thanks to Jet Huei whoedited the slides to perfection. Next wasthe race. It was anybody’s game now, thefastest win. Our expertise paid off as BOLTnarrowly edged our arch rival, SekolahIzzudin Shah by TWO seconds, whichmeans, we conquered in teams of speed(kudos to me!). However, our overallperformance deserved the first runners-up trophy, a step behind Sekolah IzzudinShah which was crowned champions.Needles to say, the sudden euphoriabroke out in the hall as the Michaelianteam sprang into our air with pride andglory - the pride of being the pioneersolar boat creators of the school andmost importantly, the honour of addinganother silverware to the school’s trophyshelf.Having our boat qualified to the state’sselection, BOLT continued serving theschool in SMK Methodist ACS Ipoh. Samerules, same tracks but only down to threeteams this time. I was uncertain aboutthe winner but what I was really surewas that all the boats had beenimprovised, allworking for betterthan the previousrounds. All eyes wereon BOLT, especiallyours, as thisbreakthrough wouldbe yet another greatachievement for theschool. All threeteams beared thesame aim at themoment as only one

worthy champion would progress to thefollowing round. BOLT made a recordtime of 4.04 seconds, his personalbest, but the other two boats were justalmost of the same pace.Unfortunately, lady luck was not savingus that day as fate repeated itself.BOLT had done well, we had strivedour best and we walked home as thefirst runners-up.Personally, the champion crown didn’tactually mattered for us. What made usproud was the honor of representing apopulation of over one thousandMichaelians and being the pioneerinventors of our alma mater. Thememories of working tirelessly in theblistering heat of the afternoon sunand the elated moments of achievingsuccess in every step in our projectwould forever be etched in our mindsand cherished by BOLT. Having thisarticle published is indeed a hugehonour, and we fervently hope thatfuture Michaelians would mimic ourfootstep to elevate the school’s nameto greater heights.BOLT, a Michaelian marvel indeed.

&Managing Course

CLUB SOCIETY

On the 27th to 30th of May 2013, I was given agolden opportunity to not only represent my belovedalma mater, SMK St. Michael Ipoh but also torepresent Perak in the Club and Society ManagingCourse National Level (Kursus Pengurusan Kelab danPersatuan Sekolah Menengah Peringkat Kebangsaan2013) which was held in Goldcourse Hotel in Klang,Selangor.

We hit the road at 11.30am on the 27th of Mayin Batu Gajah. During the long and dog-tired journeyto Selangor, the eleven of us from different schoolsand two teacher advisors discussed with each otherto elect the contingent leader. After a serious andlong discussion, I was elected to be the contingentleader. I was totally stupefied and astonished as Ihave to shoulder a huge responsibility as a leader. However, I was glad and grateful to be chosen as theleader because I can sharpen my leadership skills.

At 3.30 pm, we arrived at Goldcourse Hotel. Wegot down from the bus and went to register ournames before we head to our rooms. All of us weretotally on cloud nine because none of us expected wecould stay in that 3 and a half stars hotel. At 5.30pm, we had our dinner before we prepared ourselvesfor the ice-breaking session later at 8.00pm.

In the ice-breaking session, we were divided into16 groups comprising of different participantsfrom different states. I got to know people fromall walks of life. It was really an amazingexperience. At 10.00pm, it was time to go to bed.

The next day, we kicked start the day with ascrumptious morning breakfast. Then we enteredour first slot of the course. In the first slot, wewere given a talk about the qualities of acharismatic leader and the roles of thepresidents, vice presidents, secretaries and thetreasurers of the clubs and societies in theschools. At, 2.30 pm, we continued with thesecond slot which talked about the ways toconduct a proper weekly club meeting. In thethird slot, a public speaking competition washeld. In this slot, Perak emerged champion. On

6.00 pm, we had our dinner and on 9.00 pm, weretired early to bed as it was an exhausting day.

On the 29th of May which was the third day ofthe course, we moved on with the fourth slotwhich talked about the importance of teamwork. We were given a task to build a model made ofsticks which can withstand strong wind, long lastingand eco-friendly. My group emerged third. At 2.30pm, we continued with the fifth slot, ‘GroupPresentation’. Perak again emerged champion.Overall, our contingent was the best in everything.

At 7.00pm, we were given a chance to pay avisit to I-City, the City Of Lights. We enjoyedourselves strolling and trying out the rides in thetheme park. It was totally an unforgettableexperience. At 10.30 pm, we decided to call it aday.

The next day, it was time to say farewell. Wewere happy to go home but at the same time sadto leave our new buddies. At 1.30 pm, we leftSelangor. Through this course, I have learnt a lot ofprecious knowledge and gained mind-blowingexperiences that will be etched in my memory fora lifetime. The most important thing I gained fromthis course is ‘Together We Stand, Divided We Fall’which is imperative when we are managing ourclubs and societies in school.

PROGRAMREMAJA BERWAWASAN

Pejuang menghadapi musuh,Demi generasi baru,

Hidup aman di bumi sendiri;

Malaysia,Tanah tumpah darahku,

Bumi yang menjadi saksi kelahiran,Aman dan damai kini,

Hasil penderitaan pejuang terdahulu;

Mahukah kita melihat,Darah mengalir semula di tanah kelahiran kita,

Bangkitlah pemuda pemudi,Mempertahankan tanah yang telah diperjuangkan,

Demi melihat anak cucu kita,Tidur dengan lena,

Hidup dengan selesa;

Malaysiaku berdaulat,Dilaungkan dengan megahnya,

Untuk harapan anak muda,Menyambung ketaatan pejuang terdahulu,

Bermatian demi anak-anak,Tidak merasa nasib yang sama;

Harapan baru,Matlamat baru,Realisasikanlah.
