HISTORYEstablished in 1906 as Higher Courses in Commerce1915 – Name changed to Higher School of Commerce1933 – Name changed to Central School of CommerceUntil 1939 – Remained a private economic university
possessing full academic rightsDuring World War II continued its activity as an
underground economic university – part of the higher education system of the Polish Underground State
Between 1945 – 1949 the Central School of Commerce (SGH) resumed its activity as a private institution
1949 – The School was nationalised and renamed the Central School of Planning and Statistics (SGPiS)

HISTORY1991 – The School regained its traditional name: Central
School of Commerce (literal translation: Szkoła Główna Handlowa) and assumed the official English name – Warsaw School of Economics – to emphasize its university character
SGH initiated also a restructuring of the School and its curriculum.Three university-wide units were created, each headed by a dean.

In 1991 SGH was restructured into five Collegia: COLLEGIUM OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION COLLEGIUM OF ECONOMIC ANALYSIS COLLEGIUM OF MANAGEMENT AND FINANCE COLLEGIUM OF SOCIO-ECONOMIC COLLEGIUM OF WORLD ECONOMYThey are responsible for: research and publications,
development of academic staff and curriculum development.

SGH COLLEGIA In a sense, these are the equivalent of a Western faculty or
school, though they lack some of the managing powers over programmes, student and academic administration, which are traditionally associated with faculties in a Western setting. The Collegia are made up of Departments and Institutes.

DIPLOMASWarsaw School of Economics awards two kinds of diplomasfor full-time and extramural students: The “LICENCJAT” Diploma (an equivalent of the B.Sc. Diploma) The “MAGISTER” Diploma (an equivalent of the M.Sc. Diploma)The Ph.D. DiplomaThe “HABILITACJA” Diploma (the Advanced Ph.D. Diploma)The programmes offered to full-time and extramural students fulfil the same academic standards, although different didactic methods and organisational forms are applied.

EDUCATION SYSTEM Core curriculum, an obligatory basic offer for all students
(3 semesters) Individualization of the education after the 3rd semester Students are encouraged to pursue their academic
interests by creating a specialization, which encompasses the most appropriate courses
The tutorial system is designed to assist with this process Until 1990 students had limited choice of a curriculum.
Now, they are free to choose professors and disciplines in a manner that maximizes their intellectual development

THE STUDY PATHThe individual choice made by the student enables them
to create his/her own path of study.The curriculum allows students to obtain more than one
diploma, provided that they can meet the requirements of each field.
Moreover the students may study in a foreign language, both at the Warsaw School of Economics and within exchange programmes.
