Modeling and Analyzing a Portable Basketball Hoop Mech 410, Spring 2011 Nigel Syrotuck and Emily Huang

Overview

For our project we decided to model and analyze the stress of a working portable basketball hoop using Solidworks

We chose Solidworks to become more familiar with the software, as we had not yet used it in class.

Objectives

Model a realistic setup, where the hoop could be adjusted up and down and the dimensions matched the official rules.

Objectives Continued

Analyze the stress that would occur on the whole device as if a 200lb basketball player was hanging of the rim

The Modeling Process Let’s take a look at the model...

Modelling Challenges

Within the parts, challenged to create accurate sweeps, loft and connections between parts.

In assembly, dimensioning the parts to produce a regulation hoop, especially when they parts followed a curve.

Mating the slider.  Producing flat pins off of rounded

surfaces.

Overcoming the Challenges   Learned quickly how to handle Solidworks,

what it likes and does not, and when it’s in a bad mood.

Often was stuck in the wrong mode (sketching, moving, in a part not assembly)

Learned to use the measuring tool to help dimension the connector parts.

Replaced the flat pin extrusions with extrude-cuts, and put the pin on the other part through the hole.

Analysis Process Analyzing the stress produce by a 200lb player hanging from the rim.

 Unsuccessful mesh generation at first.

Overcoming the Challenges

•  Redefine fixture Mesh was then generated successfully
