las than a year ago the Big Spring AAFBS was nothing more th.an the dream of aty fathers to establish a government Oymg field near the tO\\.TI , Brit?f,, pomting out the n1Sting facilities, bad been shuttled from office to office, with no vi$1ble mules, but with the dadaratton of war the trurung tempo quickened. and announcement of the loca· tion of the school was made April 2, 194 2.

Soon, engmeers were on the field staking out locations, and before long, the con· trac:tmg f1nn began operations. In May Col Sam L. Ellis was dispatched from Randolph Field to supervise the army's pan m the undertakmg, and by September the five months' nunde WU ready for its first cadets.
